Is your child’s school bag too heavy?

In the Philippines, it’s already common to see young grade school students carrying huge school bags that could be heavier than them. In order to help ease burdens of school kids, the Department of Science and Technology (DoST) is proposing to introduce the Tablet PC technology which aims to replace the traditional textbooks with digital print formats and in doing so, the school kids will only be required to carry a single gadget containing all the reading materials they would need.

“We see this as a paradigm sign in teaching using the latest technologies,” says DoST Secretary Mario Montejo in an interview with GMA News.

The DoST tablet prototype is being developed by IONICS (hardware) and ASTI (software) and the device is being estimated at P4,000 per Tablet PC. With an estimated budget of P10-20 Million, DoST is targeting to pilot the Tablet PCs for school year 2011-2012 with grade 1 students from different public and private schools.

On a personal note, I believe these Table PCs would work when introduced by a “good government” but since we’re living in the Philippines, the introduction of the digital format textbooks will only give corrupt government officials another means to amass a fortune.

And how are the students supposed to highlight important texts on their digital textbooks ;-)

Friendster Not Closing. Why?

I got to admit it — Friendster started my internet addiction. It started big and I thought it will remain the internet king forever so I have tried to avoid all those wannabe newcomers — My Space, Multiply, Hi5 and the likes. I used to be asked by friends (and friends of friends up to the third degree of Friendster affinity and consanguinity) to make custom backgrounds or modify the entire design of their Friendster Profiles. The whole world was just about Friendster.

Until I got tired of it, tried Facebook and the rest is history.

Now Friendster releases some information about a Friendster Exporter App and a portion of us got so thrilled (Friendster is finally closing, yay!) while the majority are busy growing their CityVille to even notice the announcement.

We are introducing a new and improved Friendster site in the coming weeks. As part of this change, we will remove a number of social networking functions in Friendster. This includes your existing account profile, photos, messages, blogs, and shoutouts. However, your list of friends will be preserved, along with your basic profile information.

We understand that your photos, blogs and other private data may be important to you. An application is available in the “Apps” section of the site, until May 31st 2011, to help you download or export them securely to third party sites, such as Flickr or Multiply. The application is available here.

Now, if you think you still have something worth saving in your Friendster account, here’s what you’ll do to start exporting them.

Login to your Frienster account, go to Fun » App » scroll down to Friendster Exporter and click Add to Profile. Follow the onscreen instructions and you’re good to go.

You have until May 31, 2011 to do this. Unless you don’t really care.

2012 Volkswagen Beetle

Remember this 30-second 2012 Volkswagen Beetle TV ad featuring a six-legged beetle speed-drifting across a jungle floor, past ants and praying mantises that was aired during the Super Bowl XLV? Well the real bug has just revealed itself.

In an almost simultaneous Auto Shows in New York, Shanghai and Berlin last Monday, April 18, 2011, the 21st Century Beetle has been unveiled. Lo and behold! The 2012 Volkswagen Beetle.
