Susan Lim, A Singapore Surgeon, Focuses Career On Medical Advances
Susan Lim‘s life reads like a novel. Born to a middle-class family, the Singapore native knew as early as age seven that she wanted to make a contribution to the medical world. Susan Lim dedicated herself to her studies, which resulted in college scholarships and eventually led her to medical school. After attending medical school at Monash University in Australia, she spent four years in Great Britain and the United States working on her surgical degree and doctoral studies in transplantation immunology. Drawn back to Singapore, she returned to her home country where she worked in both university and hospital settings, always with the hope of making a difference.
And quite a difference she has made! Susan Lim was the first surgeon to perform a successful cadaveric liver transplant in Asia and only the second woman in the world to do so. She has gone on to become a pioneer in robotic general surgery and adult stem cell research. In addition to running a successful surgical practice in Singapore, leading a research program on adult stem cells at the National University of Singapore (NUS) and traveling the world to speak on her research, Susan Lim runs a small charitable trust with her husband called Indiapore Trust.
