Friendship Bracelets and other Beaded Jewelry

Below is just one photo of my sister’s daughter showcasing some of the beaded jewelry and friendship bracelets that they have crafted during the summer vacation. During the winter break, they were busy doing holiday perler beads but this time, they got acquainted with beaded jewelry so now they are making lots and lots of friendship bracelets.

Here’s a quick trivia about friendship bracelets. Do you know that these colorful frienship bracelets or bands were invented by Indians in Central and South America. According to tradition, you tie a bracelet onto the wrist of a friend who may wish for something at that moment. The bracelet should be worn until it is totally worn-out and falls off by itself, at which moment the wish is supposed to come true.

Beaded jewelry and friendship bracelets used to be a fad among my female classmates and their friends during my high school days. In fact, I was even able to receive some friendship bracelets from a female classmate but, unfortunately, I’m not really into it. Perhaps I would have been more happy if mobile phones are already a hit by then and I received on of those beaded cellphone chains in the photo above ;-)

How to make friendship bracelets

Method 1: The easiest way to make a friendship bracelet is by plaiting.

1. Choose 3 colours of thread that you like
2. Take 2 strands of each colour
3. Tie a knot in the end of the 6 strands and separate the different colours from each other
4. Get your friend to hold the knotted end of the bracelet and simply start plaiting the 3 colours together
5. O nce you have got to the end, or the bracelet is long enough to go round your wrist, tie a knot in the other end
6. Snip off any straggly ends and you’re done!

Method 2: This is a bit more difficult, but you will end up with a very cool pattern.

1. Take 6 strands of thread – choose any colours you like
2. Each strand represents a letter in the word F R I E N D .
3. Tie a knot in the end of the 6 strands.
