On missing posts and my three domain hosts

October 23, 2008 under INX's

I realized I lost two months of blog posts when I moved this blog from webhost to webhost. It happened when this blog was blocked by the Great Firewall of China (when it never had a dedicated IP, you could see the details here) and I had to move it to my Dreamhost hosting account. When I finally got a dedicated IP, I tried to move it back to my Hostmonster hosting but for some unexplained reason, the Wordpress blog import on Hostmonster only allows uploading 2MB of xml file (Dreamhost allows up to 7MB) so I have to truncate the files into 2MB segments and during the process, everything got messed up and the two months of blog post were lost in oblivion.

I despised most about having lost my entries about massive Hangzhou invasion earlier this year.

In my entire span of blogging, I have personally tried 3 webhosts – Netfirms, Dreamhost and Hostmonster, in their respective order. Needless to day, the first one is the worst and the last is currently the best, so far. I would not recommend Netfirms. Never!!!

My Dreamhost account still exists and currently holding a few of my so many domains. It will expire in about a month and I was thinking whether I need to renew it or let it expire. I’m still undecided. So is for my current host, I’m not sure if this would be the last one.

The best webhosting solutions may not be in existence at the moment but in order to know the closest one, or at least the one which could give you the least trouble, there are so many pointers one needs to look at. But here’s a few things I would recommend you to check before finally signing up at giving up your hard-earn money.

1. Check for feedbacks from those who had actual experience hosting their domains on web hostings.
2. Look for opinions and discussions from forums with related niche.
3. There also are websites with offers web hosting reviews and ratings which you may check for some suggested names or lists. Then you could go comparing information from one and two.
